  • AAROHAN 2014
This February as we take you back to your grade seven chemistry lab excitement, behold how the solution to everything mighty lives in simple contemplation.
History of AAROHAN

Aarohan, the Annual Techno-Management fest of National Institute of Technology, Durgapur , is a melting pot of the technically inclined students from colleges all over Eastern India.

The four-day fiesta consists of events spanning every possible field, ranging from events like Khula Maidan and Decathlon to challenge the hardcore coders, to Inspiratie and B-Plan which stimulates the grey cells of budding entrepreneurs. There are quizzes on diverse topics, and events like Junkyard Wars and Contraptions encourage the enthusiasts to apply their theoretical knowledge in the real world.

Participants from over 200 colleges all over India converge at Durgapur for Aarohan, and the occasion is suitably graced by international luminaries, like the Nobel laureate Harry Kroto and NUS professor Prahlad Vakkadapat.

Numerous workshops and lectures are organised, thus introducing the students to new vistas in the field of technology. The aim of Aarohan is to provide a platform from which one and all can get inspired.

Be there to witness the ascension.

AAROHAN 2014

"Remember those glory days?"

We believe that everyone is born a scientist with an innate curiosity about the seemingly mysterious happenings in our surroundings. Nothing is as penetrative and perceptive than a child's mind, clear as a new slate. Maybe heeding this very necessity, science is introduced to us as children through frivolous experiments that are fun to execute and enlightening in nature.

In its dozennial edition, Aarohan 2014, will embody the spirit of "Coquettish Cognition".

Embrace the finesse of science, in all of its simplicity and enigma. Leave behind your grown-up obtuseness, become a child and question everything you see, doubt what seems evitable, solve what seems an impasse, delve knee deep in old-school way of learning about things that surround us.

This February as we take you back to your grade seven chemistry lab excitement, behold how the solution to everything mighty lives in simple contemplation. Be sure to clear the dams that hold back the scientist in you and we shall open up a plethora of problems to solve.

This time, AAROHAN will make you miss high school, over and over again.

Contraptions

About the Event

"All genius is a conquering of chaos and mystery."
Lets complicate things a little. Do you see mysteries and complications wherever you go and you have never yet met a steadily logic person till date who thinks like you, then contraptions is the place for you. Making the complicated simple is commonplace but making the simple complicated : awesomely complicated, that's creativity. Its not always about wrapping up events in a finite number of sequences but to see a simple step getting completed in a series of tedious steps is amusing.

Introduction

Contraptions requires you to complete a simple event into a series of breath-taking and uncommon steps that were never thought of otherwise. A little planning in the right direction, patient thinking and efficient handling of materials can take you places. If you always find complicated answers to simplest of questions, then contraptions is going to quench your thirst. The judging criteria is the innovativeness, the exclusivity and not to forget, the madness !!!!

General Rules

  1. The balloon will be a medium sized balloon(ones which are used in birthday parties).
  2. The minimum number of steps needed to achieve your goal must be 7(seven) and run till a maximum of 25(twenty-five).Also, the minimum number of steps involving some form of Energy Conversion(for eg. Potential to Kinetic or vice versa, Translational to Rotational) out of the total number of steps must be 5(five).
  3. A team can have maximum of 4 participants.
  4. The last step of the contraption should be "The bottle is knocked off spilling the water in it
  5. Each Team will be given 3(three) trials to show their working arrangement. However failing in the earlier attempts will deduct some points. A setup time of 20 minutes will be given before each trial. In addition to this, a setup time of 60 minutes will be given to every team before their first attempt.
  6. The working time of the contraption should not be more than 5 minutes. Points will be deducted on exceeding the time limit.
  7. Parallel Contraption fetch double points (each individual step in parallel contraptions will be given double points).
  8. Repetitive steps are considered as a single step & cost of overall contraptions must be low.
  9. Once the team has entered the competition, they would NOT be allowed the use of any new object/material to their design. Modifications (if needed) are to be done with the materials which have already been used.

Problem Statements

"Bursting a balloon"

Description:
  1. A medium sized balloon will be hung from a string such that the base of balloon is 1 foot above the ground
  2. The Contraptions must burst the balloon

  2. No of energy conversions.
  3. Types of energy conversions.
  4. Originality of the ideas and innovativeness.

Entrespective

About The Event

Idea! Yes, that's all you need to get it all started. You work upon one idea and let it grow. But ideas do not occur unless the seeds are sown. By seeds I mean inspiration. Inspiration is what provides an entrepreneur that thrust...that enthusiasm...that willpower. And what’s better than you, yourself, obtaining these stories from real-life incidences! So move out there and visit a real entrepreneur and get their inspirational stories.

Objective

This is an online submission based event where we test the participant's research, journalism, presentation and writing skills. Contestants need to search for local entrepreneurs in their respective areas and bring to the limelight their inspiring stories and their successful start-ups (more details about entrepreneur selection later). These entrepreneurs are to be contacted, met in person and their inspirational stories, about how they set up their establishment, are to be obtained and documented, in a complete digital format.

Rules

  1. A team shall comprise not more than 5 members and should belong to the same college.
  2. Entrepreneurs (founder of start-ups) are to be selected based on their start-ups. Contact details of the entrepreneur must be provided.
  3. An introduction and a write-up in the form of an interview is necessary. It must be less than or equal to 300 words.
  4. A video presentation of the interview event is necessary. The video must feature both the interviewer and the interviewee (founder of the start-up). The video must be in .mp4, .mpg or .mpeg formats, having aspect ratio of either 4:3 or 16:9, with resolutions of not less than 480p. The video must not exceed 5 minutes, strictly.
  5. The video must be uploaded to your own YouTube channel with the name of the video beginning with "Aarohan 2014 - Entrespective : " followed by an appropriate caption and the link is to be mailed.
  6. A high resolution (at least HD) photograph of the entrepreneur must be provided.
  7. Submissions that are found to be copied in any manner from the Internet shall be cancelled outright.

Entries to be mailed to eidos@ccanitd.in on or before 5th Feb 2014

Judgement Criteria

  1. The selection of entrepreneur: Bigger and better is not wanted. Here, we are looking for motivational stories and start-ups that have large impact on the community. It maybe a social enterprise, a technical start-up excelling in technical innovation or a commercial venture having an imposing selling point.
  2. 50% of the score shall be from the judgement by our esteemed judge panel based on language, elegance, fluidity and essence of the write-up and the credibility and presentation of the video.
  3. 25% of the score shall be based on 'likes', on your write-ups, on our Facebook page.
  4. 25% of the score shall be based on the number of views on the YouTube video.

Blame The Builder

About the Event

"It is not the beauty of a building you should look at; its the construction of the foundation that will stand the test of time." The need of the multi-dimensional world is changing. Superimposition of modern architects over traditional one has brought revolution in this dynamic world.
Structural damage plays a major role in causing immense sufferings and/or deaths and everything goes haywire. Many road accidents take place because of roads being damaged. Old building and bridges have not been given proper care and alterations are made to them without considering the consequences. Preventive maintenance has been ignored for long .

Introduction

This event is aimed at finding the flaws as well as optimizing the designs so that the collapse can be minimized. It is the duty of a civil engineer to avoid disasters as much as possible to give way to a better world. Gear up, open up your observing senses and conquer the design.

Jurno - Detective

About us

You think water moves fast? You should see ice. It moves like it has a mind. Like it knows it killed the world once and got a taste for murder. After the avalanche, it took us a week to climb out. Now, I don't know exactly when we turned on each other, but I know that seven of us survived the slide... and only five made it out. Now we took an oath, that I'm breaking now. We said we'd say it was the snow that killed the other two, but it wasn't. Nature is lethal but it doesn't hold a candle to man.

How we work

Like you, I used to think the world was this great place where everybody lived by the same standards I did, then some kid with a nail showed me I was living in his world, a world where chaos rules not order, a world where righteousness is not rewarded. That's Cesar's world, and if you're not willing to play by his rules, then you're gonna have to pay the price.
